Say goodbye to traffic jams and waiting at red lights: Several medical facilities in North Rhine-Westphalia are gearing up to receive life-saving supplies like blood conserve or lab samples via fully automated drones. By May, logistics company Morpheus Logistik plans to unleash five Auriol drones for this mission, capable of flying up to 50 kilometers and carrying loads of up to ten kilograms.

Set for launch on May 5th, these drone deliveries will travel between clinics in Iserlohn, Schwerte, Menden, and two locations of laboratory analytics company Eurofins - Iserlohn and Gelsenkirchen. Morpheus Logistik aims to fly up to 110 times per day with these three drones, covering approximately 930 kilometers daily - that’s over 18 hours of flight time. The company has further healthcare sector clients lined up.

Completely autonomous and monitored, these drones boast a range of up to 250 kilometers and can carry up to five kilograms. They fly the routes autonomously, guided not by human hands but real-time control centers.

Earlier in 2024, Lüdenscheid saw a drone delivery service debut for industrial companies, led by Koerschulte, a company still researching drone technology. Independently, Morpheus Logistik, co-founded by Burkhard and Norman Koerschulte at the end of 2023, is seeking to expand drone operations across Europe.

Drones reduce transit times and are unaffected by traffic conditions. As a spokesperson for Eurofins Clinical Diagnostics emphasized, "Every minute counts, especially in emergency cases," making drone transportation a promising approach to improve healthcare.

Regional Focus

North Rhine-Westphalia, a hotspot for German drone development, could lead the way in these medical delivery applications. With the BKA's demonstrated ability to monitor Tor nodes in the region, advanced network infrastructure seems to support drone traffic management systems.

Although there's no concrete evidence of active medical drone services in Iserlohn, Schwerte, Menden, or Gelsenkirchen, their proximity to the Ruhr region’s medical and industrial hubs makes them prime candidates for pilot programs.

To stay updated on the real-time implementation status, checking municipal health authorities (e.g., Kassenärztliche Vereinigung Westfalen-Lippe) or associated EU-funded projects like U-ELCOME would be advisable.
