The Prolonged Closure: GHF Aid Centers Remain Shut Amidst "Maintenance"

Aid centers in Gaza continue to stay shut for another day

In the ongoing struggle for aid in the Gaza Strip, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) has delayed the reopening of its distribution centers due to alleged "maintenance and repair work." This thinly-veiled announcement has left thousands of Palestinians still waiting for urgently needed supplies.

After a recent easing of Israel's blockade on aid, the GHF, which opened four centers on May 26, has managed to distribute millions of food parcels. However, the repeated shutdowns are cause for concern, with international organizations issuing dire warnings of a looming famine.

The Israeli army has once again declared the distribution areas as "combat zones" during the renovation period, advising caution while traveling to these centers. GHF urges adherence to the Israeli army's prescribed routes.

Although Israel has eased the blockade on humanitarian aid, organizations deem the volume of supplies woefully inadequate. The United Nations and numerous aid groups have raised the alarm, predicting a catastrophic food crisis in the entire Gaza Strip.

Controversial Operations and Accusations

The GHF initially faced severe criticism from the UN and major aid organizations, who suspect the foundation of adhering to Israeli military plans. Israel, on the other hand, has long accused UN organizations like UNRWA of infiltration by Hamas.

Despite the controversy, the GHF has made impressive strides. In its first week of operation, the foundation distributed over seven million food parcels. However, recent reports of violence and casualties near the centers have raised eyebrows. Hamas has accused Israel of killing 31 and injuring 176, but the GHF and the Israeli army have denied these claims, labeling them as false propaganda. Moreover, the International Committee of the Red Cross reported 27 fatalities near a GHF distribution center, with the Israeli military stating that they fired near suspects in an ongoing investigation.

Humanitarian Efforts Amidst Conflict

The conflict between Hamas and Israel, which started on October 7, 2023, has led to over 1,200 casualties and 251 hostages, according to Hamas-controlled health ministry figures. Israel's subsequent military operations in the Palestinian territory resulted in an estimated 54,400 deaths, as per Hamas reports (unverified).

As the humanitarian situation deteriorates, Greta Thunberg has set sail to Gaza with an activist group, carrying essential supplies. With the future of aid deliveries hanging in the balance, there's a pressing need for addressing the underlying issues and ensuring the safety and well-being of all those affected.
