Allegationssurface, as Green party and leftists target Spahn with accusations, anonymously

A special investigator's report has unveiled accusations against both former Health Minister Jens Spahn and current Federal Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU), casting a shadow over their handling of coronavirus mask procurement during the pandemic.

The report by special investigator Margaretha Sudhof alleges that Spahn made questionable interventions in mask procurement deals, going against the advice of his specialist departments, raising concerns about favoritism and abuse of power. The logistics firm tasked with distributing the masks was chosen without competitive bidding and reportedly had ties to Spahn's home region, further fueling accusations of corruption and mismanagement.

Critics argue that Spahn's actions led to significant financial waste and lack of transparency. The procurement process resulted in over 700 contracts worth 6.4 billion euros, far exceeding the budget of 1.2 billion euros. The inefficient distribution and quality issues with the masks also led to rejections of payments by the government. These findings have sparked calls for Spahn's resignation and further investigations into the matter.

However, it is important to note that while these allegations are serious, they may not necessarily constitute definitive proof of corruption or mismanagement. The investigations and reports are part of an ongoing process aimed at understanding the full scope of the procurement decisions and their implications.

The report also indicates that Spahn was warned about risks associated with the procurement of corona masks, and that the procured masks were of such poor quality that they had to be destroyed later. In addition, billions of taxpayers' money were squandered on the procurement of masks that were never delivered or of poor quality.

Janosch Dahmen, Green Party health expert, has accused Spahn of lying regarding his actions during the pandemic, stating it was systematic and with the aim of self-protection. The Left faction accuses the Union of attempting to cover up Spahn's personal involvement, and of discrediting special investigator Sudhof and her report on the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG).

The pandemic resulted in a shortage of masks across Europe, but nowhere else was the squandering of taxpayers' money on such a large scale reported. There are still process risks in the billions from the mask procurement disputes at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.

The Budget Committee of the Bundestag plans to hold a "technical discussion" with special investigator Sudhof regarding her report on Tuesday. The unfolding events promise to shed more light on this controversial issue and its implications for German politics and public finances.

  1. The health-and-wellness sector and policy-and-legislation are under scrutiny due to the unveiled accusations against former Health Minister Jens Spahn and current Federal Health Minister Nina Warken.
  2. The special investigator's report suggests that politics may have played a role in mask procurement decisions during the pandemic, with questions about favoritism, abuse of power, and corruption being raised.
  3. The general news is abuzz with calls for further investigations into the procurement of coronavirus masks amid accusations of financial waste, poor quality, and potential cover-ups by the Union, involving Spahn's actions during the pandemic.
