Asbestos Awareness Campaign Launched Ahead of New Hazardous Substances Ordinance
The Ministry of the Environment and Crafts BW, led by Minister Thekla Walker, is raising awareness about the risks of asbestos during renovations of older buildings. Asbestos, a carcinogenic substance, was widely used in construction until the early 90s and can still be found in many buildings requiring renovation today.
Even the smallest amounts of asbestos fibers can cause severe health damage. Therefore, it's crucial to involve professionals in renovations. If asbestos cannot be ruled out, a technical investigation with sampling may be necessary. Private individuals must comply with the Hazardous Substances Ordinance to prevent the occurrence, release, and spread of asbestos fibers. Craft businesses should be informed about the building and usage history suggesting the presence of asbestos.
The revised Hazardous Substances Ordinance, set to come into force in early 2024, introduces information and cooperation obligations for persons commissioning demolition, renovation, or maintenance work on older buildings. Rainer Reichhold, President of the Baden-Württemberg Crafts Association, emphasizes the importance of clear information and cooperation between property owners and craftspeople for safety. A brochure has been created to inform about handling asbestos, a substance not always recognizable to the naked eye.
With the upcoming revision of the Hazardous Substances Ordinance, it's essential for both property owners and craftspeople to be aware of the risks and proper handling of asbestos during renovations. The Ministry of the Environment and Crafts BW is promoting awareness to ensure safety and compliance with the new regulations.
