Beach season in Marbella reaches peak with over 2300 reported incidents on shores

In the bustling coastal town of Marbella, Spain, the summer season brings a surge of tourists and with it, a variety of incidents and safety measures. Although specific reports for Marbella beaches during peak season are scarce, general knowledge and recent developments offer some insights.

During the first fortnight of July 2025, a total of 619 incidents involving jellyfish were managed on Marbella beaches. Lifeguards issued warnings about the presence of jellyfish during their duties, and jellyfish stings accounted for approximately 75% of the 619 medical-related interventions.

The lifeguard service recorded 95 acts involving rescue boats, many of which focused on support and supervision in high-risk areas. Among the 16 water rescues carried out, 10 were classified as minor and 6 as moderate. No severe cases were reported.

Common incidents at busy beaches often include drowning or near-drowning emergencies, injuries caused by accidents such as slips or collisions, heatstroke or dehydration cases, and sometimes theft or minor criminal activities related to crowds. In Marbella, these incidents were most frequent during yellow-flag warnings. Red flag alerts were the second most frequent type of incident.

Other necessary treatments included care for cuts, burns, anxiety attacks, and minor ailments. Fines were issued for littering, swimming in boating lanes, fishing outside designated times, and banned activities such as paragliding and beach camping.

The main reported violation on Marbella’s public areas related to beaches is illegal street vending[1]. Standard beach safety measures, such as lifeguard patrols, visible signage about swimming conditions and safety rules, public education campaigns on responsible behavior, and regular beach cleaning and monitoring of environmental hazards, are likely to be in place but are not detailed in these sources.

The Marbella beach lifeguard and surveillance service commended the coordinated efforts of the teams and urged the public to follow lifeguard instructions, respect flag signals, and comply with regulations for the safe and responsible use of Marbella's coastline. The Beach Department of the council also highlighted the importance of these efforts in ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all beachgoers during the busy summer season.
