Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro diagnosed with skin cancer, just days following his conviction for a potential coup attempt
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer, according to his treating doctor, Claudio Biroloni. The diagnosis was confirmed through medical tests conducted this week following the removal of two skin lesions during a procedure on Sunday.
Bolsonaro was readmitted to the DF Star Hospital in Brasilia on Tuesday due to vomiting, dizziness, low blood pressure, and pre-syncope (feeling like you're about to faint). According to the doctors at the hospital, his diagnosis requires clinical monitoring and periodic reevaluation.
The conviction of Bolsonaro for plotting a coup d'etat less than a week ago has not deterred his family from expressing confidence in his recovery. Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, the former President's eldest son, stated that his father would be alright, and he expressed confidence that his father would win this current battle.
Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro's sentiments were echoed by other supporters, who have rallied behind the former President. The diagnosis and subsequent hospitalization have sparked an outpouring of support from the Brazilian public, with many expressing their well wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery.
Squamous cell carcinoma starts in cells in the middle and outer layers of the skin. It is a form of skin cancer that can spread if not treated promptly. However, Bolsonaro's cancer is described as 'in situ', meaning the abnormal cells showed no signs of spread.
Bolsonaro has previously been hospitalized due to pain related to a wound sustained during a campaign trail stabbing seven years ago. His recent hospitalization and diagnosis have raised concerns about his health and the future of Brazilian politics.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available. CNN's Federico Jofre and Duarte Mendonca contributed to this report.
