Building Process Initiated for Behavioral Health and Crisis Stabilization Unit at Sheridan Memorial Hospital

The Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Wyoming is taking significant strides to improve mental health care in the state, where adults with mild or moderate mental illness often go untreated. The hospital's latest initiative is the construction of a new Behavioral Health and Crisis Stabilization Unit, scheduled to open either late in 2026 or early in 2027.

This new unit, estimated to cost $8.1 million plus, is part of the hospital's broader efforts to address Wyoming's shortage of psychiatrists. The state ranks next to last in psychiatrists per capita in the USA, with Idaho being the worst.

The Behavioral Health and Crisis Stabilization Unit is designed to provide comprehensive care for individuals in mental crisis, aiming to reduce the number of patients who have to leave the community for care. The unit will feature a crisis area, offering care in a comfortable and suitable environment, instead of the emergency department.

The new facility will prioritize addressing the needs of individuals in a way that makes sense for their unique situations. It will offer urgent care and outpatient services for mental health, aiming to provide short-term stabilization for those in crisis. The unit will also connect patients with ongoing outpatient or community-based mental health services, offering trauma-informed and patient-centered care in a safe, therapeutic setting.

In addition to improving mental health care, the Behavioral Health and Crisis Stabilization Unit will contribute to the community by providing education about mental health. This educational outreach is a crucial part of the hospital's mission to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues and promote better understanding and support.

Construction on the new unit is currently underway, and the hospital is recruiting and hiring specialized psychiatric care staff to ensure the highest quality of care. The unit is expected to make a significant difference in the lives of those in mental crisis, providing timely intervention and connecting them to appropriate follow-up care.
