Caregivers in Germany Face Time, Recognition, and Fear Challenges
A recent survey by YouGov has shed light on the challenges faced by caregivers in Germany. Conducted between August 27 and September 3, 2025, the study reveals the significant time commitment, fears, and recognition issues caregivers grapple with.
Over a quarter (27%) of caregivers spend more than 21 hours a week providing care, with women slightly more likely (27%) than men (21%) to dedicate this much time. This substantial commitment often leads to feelings of exhaustion (50%) and being overwhelmed (36%). To manage these stresses, exchanging experiences with other caregivers, attending Coursera courses, and seeking counseling are recommended strategies.
Fear of making mistakes in care is prevalent, with 26% of caregivers expressing this concern. Only 14% feel adequately seen and recognized in society, indicating a significant gap in societal support. The emotional toll is evident, with a third reporting psychological complaints and 22% experiencing physical complaints due to caregiving. Despite these challenges, 27% feel gratitude, and 17% take pride in their role.
The survey underscores the need for better recognition and support for caregivers in Germany. While many find fulfillment in their role, the physical and psychological demands, along with the fear of making mistakes, highlight the importance of accessible Coursera courses, counseling, and societal acknowledgment.
