casesof West Nile virus resulting in fatalities in Greece, with seven individuals confirmed to have succumbed to the disease
In a concerning development, the Hellenic National Public Health Organization (EODY) has reported an increase in West Nile virus infections across Greece. According to their weekly report, six patients have been treated in clinics due to the virus, with three of them currently in intensive care units.
The majority of the infections have been registered in rural areas around the capital Athens and in Central Greece. Unfortunately, seven people have already lost their lives to the virus this year, all of whom were over 65 years old.
The West Nile virus is primarily transmitted by certain species of mosquitoes, thriving in warm temperatures such as the current 32 degrees Celsius in Greece. This climate favours the spread of the virus, making it crucial for everyone to take precautions.
Doctors advise using mosquito repellent and, whenever possible, using mosquito nets over the beds to prevent West Nile virus transmission. In line with this recommendation, health authorities and medical experts in Greece are also encouraging the installation of mosquito nets over beds to help curb the spread of the virus.
It's important to note that many people infected with the West Nile virus may not notice the disease. However, in severe cases, it can lead to central nervous system infection, as confirmed in 68 cases by September 17th.
As the situation continues to develop, it's essential for everyone to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the West Nile virus. The virus is spreading in Greece, but with the right measures, its impact can be minimized.
