On World Hypertension Day, the Portuguese Society of Hypertension (SPH) will host a free blood pressure screening event in Jardim Vasco da Gama, aiming to identify new cases and raise awareness about preventing this largely symptomless condition. The screening will run from 10 am to 5 pm, and additional exams will take place at Hospital Beatriz Ângelo in Loures on the following Thursday.

According to the SPH, the hidden nature of hypertension can lead many to underestimate the severity of their condition and the importance of treatment. Fernando Gonçalves, the president of SPH, notes that hypertension-related problems persist, encompassing challenges with prevention, diagnosis, adherence to treatment, and patient access to healthcare.

Prevention remains a significant challenge due to difficulties in effectively persuading individuals to adopt healthy lifestyles and implement public health measures. Diagnostic challenges arise due to hypertension's asymptomatic nature, making early detection elusive. Adherence to therapy can be difficult for patients, and accessibility issues persist in ensuring that those in need can consistently seek medical care.

The campaign aims to draw attention to these matters, underscoring the critical need for effective prevention, early detection, and consistent treatment adherence in managing hypertension. By offering free screenings and increasing awareness, the SPH aims to ultimately improve the health outcomes of those affected by hypertension.
