Construction worker meets tragic end during erection of new medical facility in Madeira
In a tragic turn of events, a worker died on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at the construction site of the new Madeira Central and University Hospital.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 15:01, where they found a man between 40 and 50 years old who had been struck by a falling object. Despite their best efforts, the worker was pronounced dead at the scene by the regional health delegate.
The Funchal Firefighters, the Rapid Intervention Medical Team (EMIR), and the police were all present at the scene. The police have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident and whether safety protocols were followed. As of now, no further details about the nature of the worker's injuries or the cause of the accident have been disclosed.
The new Madeira Central and University Hospital, which is under construction, will feature 607 beds, including 79 intensive care beds, and 11 operating rooms. One notable addition to the hospital will be a helipad.
