Controversial St. Hubertus Mass Set for Lucerne Despite Criticism
A controversial tradition is set to take place in Lucerne, with a St. Hubertus Mass scheduled for November 9th. The event, which involves blessing hunters and their tools, has been criticized by animal welfare groups and theologians alike, who argue it contradicts Christian values of mercy and respect for life.
The St. Hubertus Mass, held annually, is often followed by hunting drives that result in the injury and death of countless wild animals. The Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare and numerous scientific studies have concluded that hunting is not a suitable method for regulating wild animal populations. The IG Wild beim Wild, an organization advocating for wildlife, has appealed to church representatives to distance themselves from these violence-glorifying masses.
Theologian Julia Bielecki has spoken out against the event, stating that celebrating a service that blesses hunters for the systematic killing of defenseless creatures sends a wrong message. She argues that true Christianity advocates for mercy and respect for life, making hunting incompatible with these values. Saint Hubertus, after whom the mass is named, himself gave up hunting after an encounter with a stag bearing a cross, further highlighting the contradiction.
Despite criticism from various groups, the St. Hubertus Mass is scheduled to take place on November 9th at 3:00 PM in the Jesuit Church in Lucerne, with the 'Auerhahn Luzern' natural horn players. The IG Wild beim Wild strongly criticizes the event and those responsible, citing the contradiction with the Christian ethic of respect for life and the Fifth Commandment, 'Thou shalt not kill.'
