Scandal at the Schleswig Juvenile Detention Center: Prison Psychologist and Department Head Bribed for Favors

  • ~2 min read

Workers at the penitentiary found guilty for illicit chocolate croissant incident - Convicted prison workers found guilty of sexual acts in exchange for pastries.

The relationship between two former employees of the Schleswig juvenile detention center and a young inmate has led to legal repercussions. The Schleswig district court has issued arrest warrants for bribery and abuse of inmates. A former prison psychologist received a sentence of nine months' probation, as reported by the Kiel public prosecutor's office. The former department head was given a seven-month probation sentence. Both were ordered to pay 1,000 euros to the state treasury as a probation condition.

Kiel's public prosecutor's office has been investigating the two women since last year for their relationship with an inmate. "The accused are suspected of bringing unauthorized items into the juvenile detention center, providing telephone access, and advocating for preferential treatment for a 17-year-old inmate with whom they had an intimate relationship," the public prosecutor's office elaborated.

Appealing the Sentence: Psychologist Takes a Stand

The public prosecutor's office declined to provide further details. According to the Bundesländer newspaper, the department head is said to have protected the inmate from drug tests, favorably influenced his performance evaluations to speed up his release, and provided him with chocolate croissants in exchange for sex. The prison psychologist is accused of creating favorable social prognosis reports for him and providing him with e-cigarette liquids, SIM cards, and phone credit. Sex was also allegedly the quid pro quo.

The former prison psychologist of the Schleswig juvenile detention center has filed an appeal against the arrest warrant, but the former department head has opted not to. The inmate has been moved to the juvenile detention center in Neustrelitz, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Transfer of Case to Neubrandenburg Public Prosecutor's Office

The case against the inmate, who is currently serving a youth sentence for another offense, will now be transferred to the locally competent public prosecutor's office in Neubrandenburg. However, the formal assumption of the case from there is still pending, according to the Kiel public prosecutor's office.

In connection with the investigation, the justice minister temporarily reassigned the director of the juvenile detention center to Kiel on leave for precautionary reasons. In March, the allegations against the two former employees also reached the state parliament's interior and legal affairs committee.
