Fabrazyme, a biologic enzyme replacement therapy, is administered to patients with Fabry disease as a long-term treatment. The typical dosage for both adults and children aged 2 years and older is 1 mg/kg of body weight, given once every 2 weeks as an intravenous (IV) infusion.
This weight-based dosing means the total dose depends directly on the patient's body weight. For pediatric patients aged 2 years and above, the dose is the same as adults. The initial recommended infusion rate starts at 0.25 mg/min (15 mg/hour), which can be adjusted based on patient tolerance.
Fabrazyme comes in two strengths: 5 milligrams (mg) and 35 mg. It is available as a powder in a single-dose vial, which is mixed with a liquid for IV infusion. The process of administration involves careful preparation to ensure safety.
If a patient has had an infusion-related reaction to a previous dose of Fabrazyme, the infusion may be administered at a slower rate. In some cases, if a patient develops an allergy or antibodies to Fabrazyme, a rechallenge dosage may be recommended (0.5 mg/kg).
