Dr. Sanduk Ruit, a globally renowned eye surgeon, recently received a significant boost to his ongoing eye care initiatives in Nepal. During a special event, Dr. Ruit was presented with a donation of $50,001 from Sherpa Kyidug USA, an organisation known for its support of health-related projects in Nepal and surrounding regions.

This donation is part of a growing commitment to support Dr. Ruit's work, as the Himalayan Hope Network, another supporter organisation, has also contributed an additional $5,007. The funds will be used to support Dr. Ruit's work in the coming days.

The financial support comes at an opportune time, as Dr. Ruit is currently in the United States promoting Nepal's successful medical practices and eye restoration model globally. His efforts are anchored by the Cure Blindness Project (formerly Himalayan Cataract Project), which has completed over 1.6 million sight-restoring surgeries worldwide as of mid-2025.

The long-term vision of the project includes funding free eye care for economically disadvantaged communities. To achieve this, Dr. Ruit plans to establish a high-tech intraocular lens manufacturing factory in Nepal. The goal is to export globally and generate profits to fund free eye care for those in need.

Lhakpa Rinjee Sherpa, Coordinator of the Sherpa Kyidug Advisory Committee, stated that the organisation decided to honour and support Dr. Ruit for his globally renowned contributions to eye treatment. The United Sherpa Association (USA) Inc. and Sherpa Kyidug America, based in New York, also honoured Dr. Ruit for his global contributions in eye care.

So far, $3 million has been raised for the project, with an estimated cost of approximately $8 million. Dr. Ruit emphasized the importance of active participation from the Nepali community to raise the remaining $5 million USD. He also plans to partner with prestigious institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, Brown, and Bascom Palmer for global partnerships.

Dr. Ruit's work continues to make a substantial impact on global eye care, performing hundreds of cataract surgeries annually and expanding outreach in low-resource regions. His collaborations with partners like the London Vision Clinic Foundation provide free surgeries funded by charity in the Himalayan region. The project partners with various organisations to deliver affordable, high-quality eye care in more than 30 countries through surgery, screenings, and training programs.
