In a significant step forward, local charity Caritas has received planning approval for its sleeping pod scheme, marking the first phase of its vision to create a community of modular homes for those in need. This initiative, known as "Together Guernsey," aims to construct a modular village settlement for homeless individuals in the island of Guernsey.

The sleeping pods, designed to be 8ft by 6ft, have been ordered from Amazing Grace Spaces and will be installed in the car park of the Douzaine in October. These pods are not intended as a long-term solution but as immediate shelter for those in urgent need.

The planning permission states that no single person can live in a sleeping pod at the site for more than 30 nights per year, and no user can occupy a pod for more than seven consecutive days. This temporary nature of the sleeping pod scheme has been welcomed by the Environmental Health and Pollution Regulation, which has no concerns over drainage for the project.

Graham Merfield, Chair of Caritas, announced wider plans to build a modular village to support homeless individuals, providing stability and hope for those in need. The sleeping pods will remain in the car park for an initial two-year period, after which Caritas hopes to have a more permanent solution in place.

Caritas extends its gratitude to the Vale Douzaine and architect StudiO for their assistance with the plans. The charity is now seeking volunteers and community partners to help maintain and manage the pods. Interested individuals or organisations can contact [email protected] to offer their support.

In addition, the Vale Douzaine will have two emergency sleeping pods available starting next month, further demonstrating their commitment to helping the homeless population in Guernsey.
