Equus Physio Pioneers Holistic Care for Horse and Rider Performance
Equus Physio, Canada's first and only practice dedicated to equine athletes and their human partners, was founded by Sandra Oxtoby and Keira Forsyth. The duo, who met during their Physical Therapy Masters program, aims to improve horse and rider performance through a holistic approach.
Sandra and Keira assess equestrians by observing them ride, identifying imbalances and asymmetries in both horse and rider. They believe that a rider's body position significantly impacts the horse's movement, and imbalances can hinder performance. To address these issues, they employ various physiotherapeutic treatments such as joint mobilization, kinesio taping, and exercise prescription.
The pair emphasizes the importance of a cohesive team involving a veterinarian, trainer, barn manager, farrier, and saddle fitter for optimal horse health and wellness. They also advocate for cross-training for both riders and horses to enhance strength, reduce injuries, and boost performance. Mounting from both sides is encouraged to prevent asymmetries in the rider and horse.
Equus Physio's unique approach to equine and rider sports focuses on improving the horse's suppleness and movement by addressing biomechanical and muscular issues. Sandra and Keira work as a functional biomechanical unit, supporting both horse and rider for healthier, sustainable movement and performance. Their proactive approach helps prevent long-term issues and reduces treatment time.
