In a remarkable turn of events, Josh Homme, the lead singer of Queens of the Stone Age, faced a serious health crisis while recording the band's live set "Alive in the Catacombs" in the Paris Catacombs in July 2024.

Homme described the experience as both physically challenging and mentally sobering, performing amidst the remains of six million Parisians in the catacombs. He was in a "very difficult physical spot," dealing with "caustic pain" during the recording. Interestingly, he reflected that his illness intensified the gravity and emotional depth of the experience, making it feel more authentic and profound than it might have if he had been well.

Within about 20 hours after the performance, Homme was sedated and underwent emergency surgery. The details of the surgery have not been publicly disclosed. The severity of his condition forced Queens of the Stone Age to cancel the remainder of their 2024 European tour.

Homme spent around seven months mostly bedridden during recovery. Initially, he was told he might require 18 months to two years to recuperate, but he returned to performing by December 2024.

In summary, Josh Homme's experience in the Paris Catacombs physically coincided with the onset of a serious health crisis requiring emergency surgery and many months of recovery. However, this harrowing ordeal also shaped the artistic intensity of the band's performance there and deepened Homme's personal reflections on mortality and music.
