Facial Defect from Parotidectomy Recovered through Fat Injection Technique
A new study suggests that abdominal dermal fat graft reconstruction can help reduce attentional distraction caused by facial deformities following superficial and total parotidectomy. This procedure restores facial contour, minimizing visible deformities that attract greater visual attention.
The study utilises an advanced eye-tracking technology to objectively measure gaze patterns, providing evidence that facial contour deformities caused by total parotidectomy can attract unwanted attention. The study employs a Tobii Pro X3 eye-tracking camera system and a Biometric Research Platform software for analysis.
This technology operates at a frequency of 120 Hz, capturing gaze patterns with precision. An infrared eye tracking sensor mounted below the stimulus screen is used to track participants' eye movements as they view the study images.
The reconstruction of facial contour with abdominal dermal fat grafts has been reported to yield high patient and surgeon satisfaction. Compared to no reconstruction, patient satisfaction rates for symmetry were notably higher, indicating substantial improvement in perceived facial contour.
The aesthetic improvement likely leads to decreased attentional distraction, as measured by eye-tracking metrics such as reduced fixation times or fewer gaze shifts towards deformities. Abdominal dermal fat graft reconstruction can normalize the attentional distraction caused by total parotidectomy.
