FDA Approves Updated COVID-19 Vaccines Targeting Omicron Subvariants
COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are surging due to new Omicron subvariants, such as Eris (EG.5) and Pirola (BA.2.86). In response, the FDA has approved updated vaccines that target these symptoms and will be available for free to many.
The new vaccines, approved for those 12 and older, and authorized for children aged 6 months to 11 years, are designed to combat the latest variants. Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax have shown their updated vaccines' effectiveness against newer strains, including Eris and Pirola.
The FDA's approval comes just in time for the respiratory season, when COVID-19, flu, and RSV viruses are expected to circulate simultaneously. The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older get the updated vaccine for optimal protection. These vaccines should provide coverage during the fall and winter, barring significant variant shifts.
The updated COVID-19 vaccines, targeting the latest subvariants like Eris and Pirola, are now available for a wide range of ages. They will be free to many, including those on Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance. Getting vaccinated is crucial as we head into the respiratory season to protect against these circulating viruses.
