First Responder Therapy Dogs Boost Mental Health of Emergency Service Workers
First Responder Therapy Dogs, a nonprofit organisation, is making a significant impact on the mental health of emergency service workers. Founded by Heidi Carman, who is known for her work with therapy dogs, the organisation has certified over 480 dog teams since 2021. These teams provide emotional support to first responders, including firefighters, police officers, and paramedics, who often face high levels of stress due to emergency situations.
Heidi Carman's journey began with Kerith, her golden retriever who was initially trained as a guide dog. However, Kerith found her true calling as a therapy dog, providing comfort and support to first responders. Carman, inspired by Kerith's impact, founded First Responder Therapy Dogs. The organisation visits police and fire departments, EMS workers, and 9-1-1 dispatch centers, offering emotional support after traumatic events.
The positive effects of these visits are well-documented. Interactions with therapy dogs have been shown to decrease stress hormones, lower blood pressure, and increase positive emotional states in first responders. This is crucial as first responders are at high risk for PTSD, depression, and alcohol abuse, and they are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty. Despite these risks, many first responders do not seek mental health support. Michelle Detrick, a retired firefighter and paramedic, credits a therapy dog visit with helping her recognise and address her undiagnosed PTSD. Commander Jack Hart of the San Francisco Police Department has also witnessed the positive impact of therapy dogs on his fellow officers.
First Responder Therapy Dogs, under Heidi Carman's leadership, has certified over 480 therapy dog teams across the US, visiting over 150,000 first responders. Carman aims to expand this work, ensuring every first responder has access to a therapy dog. The organisation's impact is clear, providing a vital service to those who often face the most challenging and stressful situations.
