Funding of EUR 5 million approved for the project by the Commission.
The Solingen Kidney Center in Germany is set to revolutionize dialysis care with the introduction of a new, resource-conserving dialysis solution. This innovative initiative, known as Smart Dialysis, aims to make dialysis care more energy- and water-efficient, thereby reducing operational costs and promoting sustainability.
The Smart Dialysis solution, a collaboration between the Solingen Kidney Center, GreenTec Dialysis GmbH, and the Bethanien Hospital, will be established at the Health Center Aufderhöhe of the Diakonie Bethanien (Aufderhöher Straße 169, 42699 Solingen).
Dr. Christoph Zwernemann, one of five physicians at the Solingen Kidney Center, stated that dialysis is a very energy-intensive process. The new solution combines various technologies, including a photovoltaic system, heat pumps, and a digital-controlled hot water storage tank, to optimize energy use and minimize waste.
The Smart Dialysis solution is expected to save around 55,000 kWh of energy per year, which accounts for 55% of the current annual energy consumption of the kidney center. It will also save an additional 24.5 tons of CO2 and 575,000 liters of water annually.
Kai Goetze, Managing Director of the Bethanien Hospital, stated that the hospital supported the project willingly due to the value placed on the Kidney Center as a reliable partner and tenant since 2011, and because the preservation and careful handling of resources are anchored in the Diakonie Bethanien's mission statement.
The water efficiency of the Smart Dialysis solution is achieved through advanced filtration technologies, water recycling, and the treatment and reuse of a portion of the dialysis fluid. This not only drives down water bills but also reduces the burden on wastewater treatment.
The energy efficiency of the solution is achieved through the use of energy-efficient pumps, sensors, and automated controls, which optimize energy use. The system also integrates real-time monitoring and feedback, allowing for precise control and minimizing resource waste.
The Smart Dialysis solution is expected to provide significant operational cost savings through reduced resource use, lower maintenance costs, and compliance with tightening environmental regulations. It may also qualify for green incentives or certifications, further enhancing operational savings.
