Germany's ePA Fully Operational by Oct 2025, Enhancing Patient Care

The electronic patient record (ePA) in Germany is set to become fully operational by October 1, 2025. This digital health tool, which securely stores patient data, is mandatory for all healthcare providers and will be accessible to patients via a smartphone app. As of now, over 70 million insured individuals already have an ePA, with around 61,600 medical practices participating.

The ePA, which launched in 2023, has already seen the loading of approximately 22 million documents. It securely stores data with access logged and servers based in Germany. Initially, it includes a list of medications, with plans to expand to include medication plans and more. By October 1, 2023, doctors were mandated to enter important patient data into the ePA.

Hospitals and other healthcare providers are gradually implementing the ePA. About 42% of hospitals aim for full use in 2025, with the rest expected to follow in 2026. Currently, over 93% of practices, dental practices, and pharmacies are technically equipped to use ePAs. Patients can view and control their data via an app provided by their health insurance company and can choose to exclude certain data from their ePA. In the future, pseudonymized ePA data may be used for research, with an opt-out option.

The ePA's widespread use is expected to enhance patient care and the healthcare system's efficiency. With the majority of healthcare providers and patients already on board, the ePA is set to become a standard tool for managing and accessing patient data in Germany.
