Hannover Pioneers New Emergency Care Standard with HP-CPR
Hannover has launched a pioneering project to enhance emergency care for cardiac arrest patients. The city's fire department, emergency doctors, and aid organizations have been testing 'High Performance Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation' (HP-CPR) since September 1, 2025. This optimized resuscitation procedure aims to set new standards in emergency care and improve patient outcomes.
The HP-CPR project focuses on immediate resuscitation by bystanders, clear collaboration among rescue teams, and continuous optimization of chest compressions. Firefighters play a crucial role, taking over chest compressions and supporting patient transport, allowing rescue service staff to concentrate on complex medical measures. The project is led by Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Flemming, Medical Director of the state capital's emergency services, who expects the HP-CPR team to almost continuously perform life-saving chest compressions and smoothly integrate important measures such as airway management and medication administration.
The introduction of HP-CPR in Hannover was prepared through intensive training, simulation training, and the use of modern resuscitation technology. For corresponding incidents, the professional fire brigade dispatches additional resources, including a fire engine staffed with four firefighters, an emergency doctor vehicle, and an ambulance. This ensures significantly more helping hands in the early phase of deployment. Initial studies and practical experiences show promising results, indicating that the HP-CPR concept can significantly improve the chances of successful resuscitation and good neurological recovery.
The HP-CPR project in Hannover is a testament to the city's commitment to improving emergency care. Dr. Axel von der Ohe, First Mayor and Councilor for Finance, Order, and Fire, expresses pride in implementing this scientifically sound and life-saving concept. With an initial evaluation planned for six months, the project's success could set a new standard for emergency care in the region and beyond.
