Hannover's initiative: trial run to optimize emergency revival procedures

The city of Hannover is taking a significant step forward in emergency medicine with the implementation of High Performance Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (High Performance CPR) since September 1, 2025. This innovative concept, aimed at increasing the chances of survival for those affected by observed collapse, is a collaboration between the Hannover Fire Department, emergency doctors, and local aid organizations.

Initial studies and practical experiences show promising results, with High Performance-CPR significantly improving the chances of successful resuscitation and good neurological recovery. The goal of this optimized procedure is to measurably improve the quality of resuscitation and gain valuable time.

High Performance CPR is a standardized and team-oriented concept that focuses on clear cooperation among emergency services, precisely defined role distributions, and continuous optimization of chest compressions. All members of the Hannover professional fire brigade have emergency medical training, providing significantly more helping hands in the early phase of deployment.

The emergency services can focus on complex medical measures under the leadership of the deployed emergency doctors, while firefighters take over chest compressions, provide necessary equipment, and support patient transport. This division of labour ensures almost continuous life-saving chest compressions and smooth integration of important measures such as airway management and medication administration.

The introduction of High Performance-CPR in Hannover was prepared through intensive training, simulation exercises, and the use of modern resuscitation technology. An initial evaluation of the High Performance-CPR project is planned for six months.

Dr. Axel von der Ohe, First Mayor and Councilor for Finance, Order, and Fire, states that High Performance-CPR is a concept that saves lives in practice and is scientifically sound. Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Flemming, Medical Director of the Rescue Service of the State Capital Hannover, explains that with High Performance CPR, all parties involved will know exactly which steps to take in which order.
