In the world of news, there's always something new to discuss. Here's a roundup of some recent developments that might interest you:

Health Updates

Open enrollment for health insurance on the Marketplace and employer-sponsored health plans starts in November, giving individuals and families the opportunity to review and adjust their coverage for the coming year.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted emergency use authorization for Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 booster shots. Pfizer booster shots are already eligible for those 65 and up, as well as those 18 and up who are at high risk due to health conditions or job exposure, at least 6 months after completing the original two-dose regimen. Johnson & Johnson boosters are eligible for anyone 18 and up, 2 months after the first dose.

The FDA also allows for mix and match when getting a booster, meaning you can receive a different COVID-19 vaccine if eligible.

On a positive note, the 7-day moving average of daily case counts is hovering around 70,000, a decrease from the height of the Delta surge. The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially named long COVID and crafted a definition, calling it "post-COVID condition."

LGBTQ+ Resources and Findings

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation, PFLAG, UC Davis, and AsylumConnect all offer resources for those looking to be allies to the LGBTQ+ community. The Trevor Project, a leading organisation for suicide prevention among LGBTQ youth, offers 24/7, free, and confidential calls, chats, and texts for those who may be struggling.

Sadly, recent research shows that more than half (52 percent) of LGBTQ youth who are enrolled in middle or high school experienced bullying in the past year. LGBTQ youth who were bullied in the past year had three times greater odds of attempting suicide. Separate research found that attending schools with gay-straight alliances (GSAs) and LGBTQ-affirming and supportive policies can lower the odds of being bullied for LGBTQ youth by 30 percent.

Interesting Findings

Lizzo gave a TED Talk on the Black history of twerking, shedding light on the cultural significance of the dance move. A study found that more than half of LGBTQ+ youth experienced harassment during the last school year.

Lastly, a playlist is available for yard work activities such as pruning, raking, mulching, composting, or playing in the leaves, making those chores a bit more enjoyable!
