Hydrocodone Tops U.S. Prescription Painkiller Abuse List in 2020
In the United States, hydrocodone topped the list as the most abused prescription painkiller in 2020. Both hydrocodone and oxycodone, Schedule II drugs, are used to manage moderate to severe pain, but misuse can lead to serious consequences.
Hydrocodone, often combined with acetaminophen, is typically taken as needed for pain. However, pure hydrocodone, marketed as Zohydro ER, is designed for long-term use, taken every 12 hours. Oxycodone, also combined with acetaminophen, is usually taken regularly rather than on an as-needed basis. Pure oxycodone, known as OxyContin, is taken every 12 hours in varying doses depending on pain intensity.
Both drugs are effective in treating various types of pain, including short-term and chronic conditions, as well as chronic cough, cancer pain, and arthritis. However, hydrocodone is more likely to cause constipation than oxycodone. The combination of oxycodone and acetaminophen is more potent than hydrocodone with acetaminophen at equal doses.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversees the safety and effectiveness of these drugs in the USA. While both hydrocodone and oxycodone are essential for managing pain, they must be taken as prescribed to prevent misuse and ensure their benefits outweigh potential risks.
