Get Ready for Sneezing Season: Health Minister Warns of Impending Pollen Frenzy

Blooming Season: Minister Mentions Pollen Airborne Information - Information indicates movement of pollen in the air, as stated by the Minister.

Hey there! With sunny days ahead, don't forget your tissues—pollen season is setting off a sneezing spree for allergy sufferers. Health Minister Judith Gerlach issues a word of caution about the Bavarian pollen flight app.

"Presently, grass pollen reigns supreme in Bavaria," shares the CSU politician.

Millions feeling the sting

"Approximately 3.5 million individuals between the ages of 18 and 79 in Bavaria currently grapple with allergies, with around 1.4 million battling hay fever," says Gerlach.

You might be experiencing hay fever symptoms like itchy eyes and a runny nose, oreven harder-to-handle respiratory issues — such as asthma. The pollen flight app can help allergists make smart decisions about outdoor activities and medication, adjusting them on the fly. The app displays multiple types of pollen all at once, according to the minister. Plus, it can pinpoint the nearest measuring station using your phone's location.

Staying ahead of the pollen game

Since 2019, the electronic pollen information network Bavaria (ePIN) has been tracking real-time pollen levels in the state using electronic pollen flight monitoring stations. These hi-tech tools can detect nearly 40 types of pollen, including tree, grass, and weed varieties. The stations are situated in Altoetting, Feucht, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Hof, Marktheidenfeld, Mindelheim, Munich, and Viechtach. They strive to provide comprehensive coverage of pollen levels across Bavaria. Data updates every three hours. Apart from the app, you can also look up information online at: www.epin.bayern.de or www.pollenflug.bayern.de.

Since the launch of the free app, usage numbers have climbed annually. In the time frame of May 2019 to present, there have been nearly 1.5 million accesses. "Besides displaying the present pollen load in the app, users can now create a personal diary," says Gerlach.
