Investigative meeting following revelation of tax dollars supporting progressive beliefs in charitable healthcare institutions
In a recent hearing, the House Ways & Means Oversight Subcommittee focused on the spending habits of tax-exempt hospitals, following the release of a report by Consumers' Research. The Consumer Warning report, unveiled in June, highlighted five hospitals funding a partisan agenda on diversity, equity, inclusion, radical gender ideology, and climate activism with taxpayer money, instead of focusing on reducing costs and providing better healthcare to patients.
Will Hild, the executive director of Consumers' Research, spoke at the hearing about their report. Hild emphasized that the purpose of tax-exempt status is for profits to be reinvested into healthcare, not for the benefit of shareholders or executives.
Hild also pointed out that there is no price transparency in the nation's hospitals, which can lead to potential financial danger for consumers. This misprioritization of politics over patients, Hild stated, can compromise the quality of treatment and increase costs.
One of the witnesses at the hearing was Hild, who testified about the Consumers' Research report. Hild spoke about gender-affirming care on minors in the context of the report, which highlights transgender procedures performed by hospitals on children. Hild suggested that these interventions are harmful to children and that it's morally reprehensible for hospitals to claim them as a community benefit.
Hild further suggested that some hospitals are betraying the fundamental agreement made when they took the tax-exempt status. If hospitals cannot find ways to invest in healthcare in a better or more cost-effective manner, Hild suggested, they may not need the subsidies they currently receive.
Two of the five hospitals named in the Consumer Warning report have previously refuted some of the statements made about them. Despite this, the report has sparked a much-needed conversation about the responsible use of taxpayer dollars by nonprofit hospitals.
The hearing titled "Virtue Signaling vs. Vital Services: Where Tax-Exempt Hospitals are Spending Your Tax Dollars" was not only about the Consumers' Research report, but also about the broader issue of how tax dollars are being spent by tax-exempt hospitals. In addition to the report on woke ideology in hospitals, Consumers' Research sent letters to President Donald Trump, Congress, and the governors where the five hospitals in question are.
Consumers' Research, the nation's oldest consumer protection organization, was one of the witnesses at the hearing. The organization's commitment to consumer protection and transparency in healthcare is evident in their work, which aims to ensure that tax-exempt hospitals are fulfilling their primary mission: providing quality healthcare to patients.
