Heiligenhaus/Velbert: The Role of Local Hunters in Protecting Young Fawns

André Linke, a hunter in Heiligenhaus, manages District III and is deeply passionate about animal welfare. As the breeding season for fawns approaches its peak, he and his colleagues have been working tirelessly to safeguard the young deer.

An image captured by Linke's wildlife camera reveals a fawn left in a meadow by its mother, camouflaged among the tall grass. While the woodland provides protection from predators, it is humans who pose the most significant risk to the fawns, explains Linke, who has held a hunting license for eight years.

With farming season on the horizon, Linke, his hunting association, and a drone pilot collaborate closely with farmers to delay mowing until it is safe for fawns. The team surveys meadows in the evening and early morning to locate and relocate any fawns to a safe zone before the farmers commence their work.

Once the fields are clear, the fawns are returned to their original locations so they can be found by their mothers. This coordinated effort by hunters proved successful last year, with 42 fawns saved in the Mettmann district alone.

Unfortunately, a more pressing concern for Linke is the lack of awareness among dog owners during breeding and nesting seasons. Many still allow their dogs to roam free amidst meadows and forests, posing a grave threat to fawns, hares, and ground-nesting birds.

"Dogs can discover pregnant does or bite fawns accidentally, causing untold suffering and sometimes death," warns Linke, a dog owner himself. He emphasizes that this behavior stems from an instinct that cannot be controlled by some owners.

To ensure the safety of animals, Linke appeals to dog owners to respect the regulations and keep their pets on leashes during the critical fawn season. With responsible pet ownership, the hunters of Heiligenhaus and Velbert can continue to work harmoniously with the community to protect native wildlife.
