Emergency medical work is more than just a job - it's a passion, a calling, and a source of immense satisfaction. That's according to veteran responder Elena Ischenko who has clocked 24 years in the field.

Each day presents unique challenges, as Elena discovered on a recent busy morning. An elderly gent with a shattered leg was just the start. With the aid of her quick-thinking team, they treated and transported him to the trauma department within half an hour.

"I've only had to call for emergency assistance twice, and I'm grateful that modern services are efficient and well-equipped," said Riszat Mubarakshin, who found himself on the receiving end of care on this special day, the Day of the Emergency Medical Worker - celebrated annually on April 28. On this day in 1898, the world's first emergency medical station opened in Moscow.

Tatiana Churina, a dedicated paramedic for the past 8 years, shared her journey. She left the field briefly, seeking greener pastures, only to find herself drawn back. "My station feels like home," she acknowledged.

The emergency vehicle is more than just a vehicle. It's a mobile health clinic, equipped with everything from vital medications to advanced equipment. Never underestimate the power of a tablet, either. Each team has one for receiving calls, providing instant access to vital patient data like age, gender, and address, as well as the reason for the call, even recordings of conversations with dispatchers.

No day is typical. One moment could find the team assisting a lady who had pepper spray sprayed in her face, and the next, answering a call from a pensioner suffering from arrhythmia and a pulse of 172. It's a rollercoaster ride, but it's what these heroes signed up for.

In today's world, emergency responders face significant challenges. Psychological distress among paramedic students is common due to clinical errors, death exposure, and high exposure to trauma [1][3]. Workplace violence is another issue, with emergency departments being high-risk environments [3].

Conversely, modern technology is transforming emergency services. Telemedicine, portable diagnostic tools, data interoperability platforms, and simulation training are now becoming standard practices [2][4][5]. These advancements are crucial in addressing gaps in care protocols, improving patient outcomes, and enhancing the mental resilience of these unsung heroes [1][5].

Let's take a moment to acknowledge these brave individuals who stand guard, work tirelessly through the night, and contribute so selflessly to society. Happy Day of the Emergency Medical Worker to all!
