University Medicine Göttingen (UMG) has announced it will receive funding for the "UMG 2032 - Excellence through Focus" project, a strategic initiative aimed at advancing the university medical center's research, clinical care, and teaching. The funding, totalling 18.5 million euros over the next five years, comes from the state of Lower Saxony and the Volkswagen Foundation.

The project sets interdisciplinary thematic foci that connect basic, translational, and clinical research to address major medical challenges. Themes include neuroscience, cardiovascular medicine, oncology, and more, as reflected in UMG's established research focuses such as the Göttingen Cluster of Excellence MBExC. This research cluster studies disease-relevant functions of heart and nerve cells using cutting-edge bioimaging techniques.

A significant new pillar in the UMG Strategy 2032 is transfer, emphasising the translation of research findings into medical innovations and societal benefit. Internationalization is also a key component, aimed at expanding UMG’s global collaborations and visibility to attract excellent researchers and foster cutting-edge research partnerships.

Talent promotion is a priority, with plans to enhance support for early-career researchers and clinicians through structured programs that nurture their development and foster excellence in medicine and research. As part of this, a "Medical Career Center" will be created to support postdoctoral medical professionals within the "UMG 2032" project. Additionally, a "Graduate School" will be established to attract skilled professionals.

The funding aims to translate new scientific findings into new therapies or medications quickly. The project's long-term goals include collaboration with other research institutions, both on and off campus, to further develop UMG's research profile and improve the international visibility of its universities.

Wolfgang Brück, UMG board spokesman, stated that the funding will strategically link the thematic foci, helping to consolidate and advance UMG's position as a leading university medical center. The "UMG 2032 - Excellence through Focus" project began on July 1, and other universities in Lower Saxony will also receive funding, totalling 265 million euros. The announcement about the funding and projects was made by University Medicine.

The "UMG 2033 - Excellence through Focus" project includes a focus on neuroscience, cardiovascular medicine, and oncology, which aligns with the university's existing research cluster, MBExC, that studies disease-relevant functions of heart and nerve cells using cutting-edge bioimaging techniques. In line with the project's emphasis on science and medical innovations, vocational training programs will be established to nurture early-career researchers, clinicians, and postdoctoral medical professionals in health-and-wellness sectors, such as the "Medical Career Center" and a "Graduate School."
