Hessian Lakes Pass the Swimming Test with Flying Colors 🏊♂️💦
Most lakes exhibit superior water clarity and purity. - Majority of bathing lakes feature high-grade water condition.
Get ready for a splendid summer! The Hessian Agency for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology (HLNUG) has some fantastic news: Most Hessian lakes have top-notch water quality for a refreshing dip! Seventy-five percent of the 61 Hessian bathing waters received an "excellent" hygienic rating, with just the remaining 25% classified as "good." Don't worry; not a single lake disappointed with insufficient or deficient ratings!
Lakes opening up across the region
Today, 54 lakes stood ready for swimmers, and six more will soon follow suit, hopefully by July 1st, as promised by HLNUG. Although one lake will remain closed, don't fret – it's not due to poor water quality.
Last year's water quality checks
Each Hessian bathing water was subjected to rigorous EU Bathing Water Directive inspections, according to HLNUG. Samples were collected to determine levels of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci, bacteria indicative of fecal contamination.
Blue-green algae caution
Even with pristine water quality, occasional swimming restrictions may occur if blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) form an excessive presence, as HLNUG explains. While they don't affect the hygienic classification, it's better to avoid entering the water if visibility is poor.
Be vigilant around blue-green algae: if standing up to your knees, you can't see your feet – steer clear of swimming!

The community can rejoice as the Hessian Agency for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology (HLNUG) implements rigorous science and health-and-wellness measures, ensuring the excellent water quality of most Hessian lakes for swimming. However, it's essential to stay vigilant around blue-green algae during swims, following the community policy and health-and-wellness guidelines set by HLNUG.
