Tackling New Year's Eve Unrest: A Call for Fireworks Ban
Many individuals advocate for a prohibition on product transactions
Germany's hot topic, you ask? That'd be the buzz around fireworks during New Year's Eve celebrations! With growing public backing, the Berlin Police Union (GdP) is leading the charge to ban these pyrotechnics, arguably making Berlin the epicenter of the conversation. Here's the lowdown on the ongoing debate.
Sounding the Alarm: A Ban on Private Fireworks
Berlin's GdP chief, Stephan Weh, boldly stated that the public is ready for a shift in their New Year's Eve mindset, based on a poll conducted by the union (April 3-13). The results indicate that a staggering 97% of the 178,022 participants favor a ban on private fireworks. Not only that, but 93% support a sales ban, and 95% pledge compliance if such a ban is imposed.
Organized Spectacles? Yes, Please!
Instead of private fireworks, an overwhelming 91% of poll participants would opt for organized events featuring certified pyrotechnicians. Nearly half (49%) even expressed interest in attending these shows, while 70% of people claimed to have stopped venturing outside on New Year's Eve.
Mass Support for a Change
The poll reached participants across all federal states and was promoted through social media. More women (63%) than men (35%) participated, with 85% of respondents being over 30 years old. This move has also gained support from other organizations, like the German Environmental Aid. The Berlin GdP regional branch initiated a petition for a fireworks ban back in 2023, which has garnered over two million signatures.
Stay tuned for the Interior Ministers' Conference (June 11-13) where the interior ministers will discuss this very issue, armed with the poll results.
