"Where's Doc Volker?" Whenever professional athlete injuries arise on TV shows like Ninja Warrior and Dancing with the Stars, Volker Gilbert, esteemed orthopedic surgeon, swoops in to offer his expertise with the dilemma at hand. Battered ankles, contused elbows, strained muscles—all in a day's work for the veteran practioner of the surgical clinic he operates alongside his wife Martina in Bergisch Gladbach.
Up in smoke
When patients stop by the clinic today, they'll find things somewhat amiss: "Doc Gilbert, where are you?" Because the clinic has recently made the move from Quirlsberg to the lofty Marienberg, nestled at the Marien Hospital, as of early March.
"We've settled in quite nicely here," says Martina Gilbert with an air of enthusiasm. "The rooms are impressively roomy, making for efficient work. We even boast three treatment rooms now. The reception, waiting area, and entrance are immaculately designed, flooded with natural light."
Building blocks for a specialized outpatient center
Dr. Gereon Schiffer, chief physician of the orthopedics department at GFO clinics Rhein-Berg, is overjoyed that the illustrious clinic has now taken root at the Marien Hospital. "By situating here, we have added a crucial component to our efforts to transform the Marien Hospital into a leading outpatient facility." They have been aggressively pushing the outpatient care initiative at the MH with vigor.
Katrin Aulenkamp, the executive director, precisely expresses the enthusiasm: "We feel exceptionally well equipped for the future of healthcare." The shift of the practice's headquarters to the MH is also a clear statement to the region, a key step forward in forward-thinking healthcare. "An important milestone for outpatient care, specialization, and for the entire system."
Specialized in minor surgical interventions
The clinic shares a physical connection with the outpatient surgery center of the hospital. "We've been collaborating closely for quite some time," says Schiffer. While Schiffer and his team manage intricate bone, muscle, and joint surgeries, small surgical procedures are handled within the clinic. This includes minor hand surgery, dermatological surgery, removal of skin lesions, and minor aesthetic procedures like eyelid lifts.
"We also treat patients following hospital discharge. If an X-ray is required, that's easily arranged via our cooperation with the mountain office," says Gilbert.
As a liaison physician for the professional association, Dr. Volker Gilbert is responsible for work-related injuries. "Our associates from the hospital can be treated here efficiently following minor wounds or falls," explains Schiffer.
