Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Intends to Finalize a Contract for the Sputnik V Vaccine

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a state in Germany, is planning to secure one million doses of the Russian COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V, following in the footsteps of Bavaria. State Health Minister Harry Glawe (CDU) confirmed this to NDR.

The deployment of the Russian COVID-19 vaccine in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is currently planned for late May or early June, but this may change depending on the approval process. The European Union's drug regulatory authority, EMA, needs to approve the Russian COVID-19 vaccine for it to be used.

The vaccine deal, if successful, will provide one million vaccine doses for the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. However, this number could potentially increase, given the negotiations are ongoing.

The negotiations for the vaccine deal have been coordinated with the state chancellery and the federal government. The federal government is expected to cover the costs of the vaccine deployment, but this may also apply to the Russian vaccine.

It's worth noting that Germany did not widely use or order the Sputnik V vaccine in 2020, instead focusing on BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna vaccines with large orders. However, around 2.5 million doses of the Russian COVID-19 vaccine are expected to be delivered to Bavaria after approval in Europe.

The Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder (CSU) has announced plans to sign a preliminary contract with the manufacturer of the Russian COVID-19 vaccine. The federal government of Germany is also negotiating possible deliveries of the Russian vaccine.

The deployment of Sputnik V is being considered for late May or early June. The negotiations for the Russian vaccine deal are being conducted separately by both Bavaria and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

If approved, the Russian COVID-19 vaccine could potentially be delivered to both Bavaria and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. However, currently, there is no known plan or active timeline for receiving Sputnik V vaccine doses in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and no delivery is reported to be expected in the near term. The vaccine remains largely absent from Germany’s official COVID-19 vaccination programs in 2025.

The state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is aiming to secure one million doses of the Russian COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V, which could contribute positively to the health-and-wellness of its citizens. The deployment of the vaccine is currently under negotiation and could potentially be delivered in late May or early June, subject to the science-based approval process by the European Union's drug regulatory authority.
