Medical professionals in Primorye successfully saved a teenager battling a serious health condition
A 17-year-old teenager from Nakhodka underwent a successful surgery at the No. 1 Regional Children's Clinical Hospital in Vladivostok. The incident was reported by IAA PrimaMedia, citing the 18+ Telegram channel "Vladivostok Emergency."
Initially, the patient was admitted to the Nakhodka City Hospital due to acute abdominal pain, and the initial diagnosis was suspected to be appendicitis. However, further investigations revealed a different condition. The teenager was diagnosed with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), a diagnosis that was later confirmed.
The surgery involved the removal of a rare congenital anomaly, a cyst in the common bile duct (choledochus). This procedure is not common in teenagers unless the cyst causes symptoms such as biliary obstruction, cholangitis, or pancreatitis. Choledochal cysts are congenital bile duct anomalies, and their surgical removal is primarily indicated in children and teenagers to prevent future complications like infection or malignancy.
The journey of the teenager was smooth due to the swift actions of the medical team. The transport was coordinated by a team from the Vladivostok Territorial Center for Emergency Medicine.
Recovery from HFRS in children typically involves supportive care focused on managing symptoms such as shock, low blood pressure, vascular leakage, and kidney damage. Children may require interventions like hemodialysis to filter blood while kidneys recover. Recovery is gradual and may include ongoing fatigue, inflammation, and the need for close medical follow-up to monitor kidney function and prevent complications.
It is worth noting that the surgery on the teenager was not related to the previously mentioned case of HFRS. The removal of a common bile duct cyst in teenagers is a specialized surgical procedure and not a common intervention unless clinically indicated by symptoms or complications.
The teenager was discharged from the hospital in a stable condition and is now on the road to recovery. This case serves as a testament to the swift and effective actions of the medical team in Vladivostok.
After being initially diagnosed with appendicitis due to acute abdominal pain, the teenager underwent further medical investigations that revealed the actual condition to be hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), a rarely seen medical-condition. Despite this, the teenager also had a congenital anomaly, a cyst in the common bile duct (choledochus), which required a specialized surgical procedure for its removal to prevent future chronic-diseases and complications related to the health-and-wellness of the teenager.
