Money is stored away, bringing about my joy.
In the past 18 years of our marriage, money management has evolved into a crucial aspect of our lives, affecting not just us, but our children as well. Our children, silent observers, have been learning from our financial decisions, each one shaping their understanding of money and its importance.
Initially, I approached money as a means to bring joy and create special moments. From treats and meals to weekend snacks, I saw spending as a way to make life more enjoyable. However, with the arrival of our children, the financial landscape became more challenging. Higher grocery bills, school costs, and the needs of our growing family presented new considerations.
My husband, on the other hand, values money as a source of security. He carefully considers every purchase, driven by a desire to protect our family's financial future. His financial responsibilities extend beyond our immediate family, as he also cares for his parents. This role, often assumed by one spouse in familial and estate planning contexts, has shaped his cautious and saving-oriented personality.
Given our contrasting approaches to money, disagreements were inevitable. I was concerned about being perceived as the one always saying yes to our children's wishes, while my husband was the one constantly saying no. However, over time, we have evolved from our original positions.
Our vacations have become a good example of our financial compromise. While I still value experiences that bring joy and create memories, I have become more mindful of our budget. Simultaneously, my husband has begun to recognise the value of special moments, striking a balance between security and enjoyment.
Despite my contribution to the family finances, I don't usually handle major household expenses. This responsibility falls on my husband, who, as the primary breadwinner, shoulders the weight of our financial obligations. However, he is not immune to financial constraints, as his responsibilities limit his spending on luxuries.
Our journey of money management has taught us the importance of understanding, compromise, and evolution. We have learned that love isn't just about fulfilling wishes, but also about setting boundaries and protection. And as we continue to navigate this journey, we hope to instil these values in our children, preparing them for their own financial futures.
