Offender Imprisoned for Disclosing Child Abuse to a Covert Police Agent
Darlington Man Sentenced to 29 Years for Child Rape
Jaifar Trigwell, a 42-year-old resident of Darlington, has been sentenced to 29 years in prison for raping a child. The disturbing case, which spanned between the years 2023 and 2025, has left a profound impact on the victim's family and community.
The victim's mother, in an emotional impact statement in court, described the crime as 'significant and profound', stating that it will affect their lives for many years. She expressed her heartache every time she looks at the child and lamented that her trust for everyone has been lost, and the pain is indescribable.
Trigwell was initially accused of the heinous acts but initially denied the allegations. However, he later pleaded guilty to four counts of rape of a child, two counts of inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and four counts relating to indecent images.
The detective who led the investigation into the Trigwell case is Detective Inspector Helen Grace. She and her team, including Detective Constable Amie Thornton from the Darlington Safeguarding Unit, worked tirelessly to bring Trigwell to justice.
Trigwell was found to have communicated online with whom he believed was another paedophile, discussing and bragging about abusing a child. He even proposed exchanging videos of the abuse he had recorded.
Detective Constable Amie Thornton praised the victim's courage and the investigation's outcome that led to Trigwell's admission and guilty plea. She constantly works with specialist officers to monitor, expose, and jail sexual abusers like Trigwell.
In addition to the prison sentence, Trigwell was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and placed on the Sex Offender's Register for life. A restraining order was also issued, prohibiting him from contacting the victim.
