Paving the path for women's elevation in a male-dominated sphere, she illuminated the path
In the world of Kenyan politics, a significant shift has been making headlines – the massive shift of Raila's allies to Ruto's hardliners. But today, we turn our focus to a remarkable woman who made an indelible mark on gender equality in Kenya, Phoebe Asiyo.
Born on September 12, 1932, and passing away on July 16, 2025, Asiyo was a trailblazer in every sense of the word. She was a politician, women's rights activist, and diplomat who dedicated her life to advancing gender equality.
As the president of the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organisation (MYWO), a major women's advocacy group in Kenya, she championed the economic empowerment of African women. During her tenure, she promoted small-scale businesses and better farming methods, advocated for improvements in women's and maternal healthcare, and fought for greater participation of women in all three branches of government.
Asiyo was also a formidable force in Kenyan politics. Elected to Parliament in 1980, she served multiple terms until 1997, using her position to fight for women's political representation and legal reforms advancing women's rights.
Internationally, she served as an ambassador for the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) from 1988 to 1992, representing Kenyan women's interests on the global stage.
Later, she was appointed a Commissioner on Kenya's Constitution Review Committee in 2001, advocating for constitutional reforms that support gender equality. She also chaired the Caucus for Women's Leadership, mentoring young women and advancing women’s leadership in politics.
Asiyo was the first female Luo elder and was honoured with Kenya’s Chief of the Burning Spear award in 2018 for her lifelong work promoting girls' education and gender equality. Her legacy includes relentless lobbying for legal reforms, social justice, peacebuilding, and combating female genital mutilation in Kenya.
In summary, Phoebe Asiyo’s impact on gender equality in Kenya was profound and multifaceted. She empowered women economically and politically, advocated for health and legal reforms, represented women internationally, and served as a mentor and elder, helping to reshape societal attitudes towards women’s leadership and rights.
