Politicians advised to steer clear of a proposed Sh7.5b hospital in Lusaka, warning them against interfering with the project.

The Bungoma Level 6 Hospital is set to make history as the first facility of its kind in Western Kenya, marking a significant milestone not just for Bungoma but for the entire region. The transformative KSh7.5 billion hospital, funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB), is designed to serve not just Bungoma but the wider Western region.

Groundbreaking for the hospital is scheduled for March 2026, with the project's location at Sichei in Kabuchai Constituency being the preferred choice. Industrialization Principal Secretary Dr. Juma Mukhwana has assured stakeholders of the national government's support for the project, reiterating the government's commitment to ensuring all processes are concluded in time for construction.

The hospital, once complete, will position Bungoma as a regional hub for advanced healthcare, offering training, research, and advanced diagnostics. Beyond healthcare, the hospital is expected to be a powerful economic stimulus for Bungoma, creating jobs and spurring growth in infrastructure, trade, and real estate.

Governor Kenneth Lusaka has cautioned local leaders against politicising the hospital, emphasising the importance of unity for its successful rollout. Lusaka's remarks were aimed at cooling rising political tensions surrounding the project's location and implementation.

The signing of a financing agreement between the National Treasury and AfDB, which is crucial for the project's progress, is still pending. However, the African Development Bank has expressed its support for the hospital, and the signing of the agreement is expected to take place in November of this year.

Dr. Mukhwana has emphasised that this project is not about scoring political points but about safeguarding the health of millions and laying down a foundation for Bungoma's future. Beyond healthcare, the hospital is expected to provide specialized services including treatment for terminal illnesses.

Some leaders have reportedly been angling for alternative sites for the hospital, but the government remains committed to the Sichei location. Lusaka has urged these leaders to put the interests of the people first and support the project for the betterment of Bungoma and the wider Western region.

In conclusion, the Bungoma Level 6 Hospital is more than just a healthcare facility. It is a beacon of hope for the people of Bungoma and the Western region, a symbol of progress and a catalyst for economic growth. As we await its groundbreaking in March 2026, let us remain united in our support for this transformative project.
