Pope Leo XIV Sets 'Hope' Theme for 2025 World Day of Grandparents

Pope Leo XIV has announced the theme for the 2025 World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly as 'Blessed are those who have not lost hope' from the Book of Sirach. In his first message for the day, the 70-year-old Pope Leo urged everyone to think big and work for a change that restores esteem and affection to the elderly. This year's celebration marks the fifth edition and coincides with the Jubilee Year.

Pope Leo called on every parish and church group to visit older people regularly as part of a 'revolution' of care and gratitude. He wrote that visiting elderly people who are alone can grant a Jubilee indulgence. The Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life has created a pastoral kit for Jubilee celebrations in places where the elderly live. Grandparents, Pope Leo noted, offer examples of faith, devotion, civic virtue, social commitment, memory, and perseverance. He emphasized that embracing the elderly helps understand life's value beyond superficial encounters. The first World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, initiated by Pope Francis, will be celebrated on July 27, 2025.

Pope Leo XIV's message for the 2025 World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly underscores the importance of showing care, respect, and affection towards the elderly. By embracing their wisdom and examples, we can gain a deeper understanding of life's true values.
