In a tense school community, Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder has urged for a meeting with the 16 state ministers and the Federal Chancellor on Monday, November 16, to discuss potential extensions and tightening of pandemic measures. Another meeting may take place the following week.

Söder has emphasized the need for "special attention" to schools, suggesting a precautionary regulation for when and how older grades could attend classes in person or remotely. He also advocates for uniform corona rules, such as a mask requirement for all schools in Germany.

The meeting aims to draw an interim balance of the restrictions in place since November. However, Söder has made it clear that it is too early for fundamental decisions at this meeting. No new information about specific decisions or the interim balance of restrictions has been provided.

In addition, Söder has proposed a clear agreement to adapt teaching plans and reduce performance pressure on students. This proposal is aimed at easing the burden on students during these challenging times.

The state ministers are scheduled to meet with the federal chancellor on Monday, and another meeting may occur the following week. The discussions could lead to the extension and tightening of measures against the pandemic, rather than loosening.

As the virus continues to cause only a fraction of respiratory infections, the week from November 23 to 27, 2025, will be crucial in deciding whether to expand and tighten pandemic measures in Germany. The 16 state ministers together with the Federal Chancellor must make these decisions.

The "mood in the school community" is described as "very tense". Söder's call for special attention to schools and his proposals for precautionary regulations and uniform corona rules are aimed at alleviating some of this tension and ensuring the safety and well-being of students and teachers.
