Record-Breaking Demand for McDonald's New 'Protein Plus Slice': India Ravishes the Launch

McDonald's India Introduces Protein Plus Slice: A Nutritional Breakthrough in the QSR Industry

McDonald's India, in partnership with the CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CSIR-CFTRI), has unveiled the Protein Plus Slice – a 100% vegetarian, plant-based innovation that adds 5 grams of protein to any burger. This groundbreaking product is part of a broader "Protein Plus Range" aimed at enhancing protein consumption in the quick-service restaurant (QSR) segment.

The Protein Plus Slice was co-developed by CSIR-CFTRI, a premier food research institute, to integrate seamlessly into McDonald's existing burger line-up. This includes popular options like the McSpicy Paneer, McChicken, McVeggie, and McAloo Tikki, allowing customers to personalize their protein intake by adding one, two, or even three slices to their favourite burgers without compromising taste.

This innovation represents a first in the QSR industry, empowering customers with greater nutritional control and aligning with rising consumer interest in protein-rich diets. It has been marketed with chef Sanjeev Kapoor to highlight its benefits.

The Protein Plus Slice is a science-backed formulation, designed to provide a healthier, nutritious choice that supports McDonald’s “Real Food, Real Good” philosophy. This development reflects McDonald’s strategic move toward mindful indulgence and nutritional innovation in the Indian QSR market.

The launch event was inaugurated by Shri Yogesh Kadam, Hon'ble Minister of State for FDA, Government of Maharashtra. The Protein Plus Slice saw unprecedented demand, with Mumbai leading the region in sales, followed by Pune and Ahmedabad each selling over 3,000 slices, and Bengaluru and Chennai each exceeding 1,500 slices. Within 24 hours of launch, over 32,000 units were sold, serving approximately 160,000 grams of plant-based protein to customers across West and South India.

The Protein Plus Slice is free from onion and garlic, making it suitable for a wide range of dietary preferences. This new addition to the menu allows customers to savour their favourite McDonald's burgers with the added nutritional goodness of protein, whether dining in, picking up via Drive-Thru, or ordering from home through the McDelivery app.

The Protein Plus Range reflects Westlife Foodworld's ongoing commitment to their 'Real Food, Real Good' philosophy. Akshay Jatia, Chief Executive Officer of Westlife Foodworld, stated that the range allows customers to personalize their protein intake. Dr. Sridevi Annapurna Singh, Director of CSIR-CFTRI, expressed excitement about continuing their partnership with McDonald's India to advance nutritional innovation in the QSR space.

This development marks a significant step forward for McDonald's India, as they continue to prioritize nutritional innovation and customer choice in the QSR industry.
