"Regrettable statement": The doctor reportedly stated that Maradona was given burgers following his surgery
Football Legend Diego Maradona's Trial: A Scathing Indictment
The sensational trial over football icon Diego Maradona's demise continues to unfold in Argentina. Groundbreaking details about his untimely end emerged during the hearing, as exclusively reported by our site, citing RIA Sport.
In the hotseat, Fernando Villarejo, the director of the intensive care unit at the clinic where Maradona received treatment, testified in court. He unabashedly compared himself to a "pawn between the king and the queen," alluding to Maradona's personal doctors - neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov.
"Post-op, anything went. What followed was a damn shame. I take full responsibility," Villarejo was quoted as saying.
He clarified that after the operation, the footballing legend was allowed to indulge in junk food like hamburgers, and his personal doctors denied other medical professionals from assessing his condition.
Additionally, Luque and Cosachov elected to move Maradona from the clinic to a private home in Tigre, Argentina, removing the opportunity for further discussions on treatment plans.
Villarejo added that Maradona's operation was conducted without preliminary examinations, and a few days later, Luque ordered him to administer sedatives to the footballing titan to "kick his alcohol addiction by force" as he was deemed an uncontrollable patient.
The tragic end came on November 25, 2020, when Maradona, then 60, succumbed to acute heart failure, which resulted in pulmonary edema.
Known as the champion of the 1986 World Cup, he is universally acknowledged as one of the greatest footballers of all time. His talents earned him the title of the best footballer of the 20th century on the official FIFA website.
Notably, seven out of the eight medical professionals who attended to Maradona in his final days are the key defendants in the case. They are charged with involuntary manslaughter and criminal negligence that purportedly led to his death.
As previously chronicled by the BBC Russian Service, a commission of 20 experts who investigated the circumstances surrounding Maradona's death in 2021 determined that the actions of the group of doctors were "inappropriate, inadequate, and irresponsible."
The experts concluded that there was ample evidence to suggest that, with appropriate medical care, Maradona's chances of survival might have been higher.
If found guilty, defendants face sentences ranging from eight to 25 years in prison.
Earlier in court, police officers who responded to the distress call about Maradona's death testified, expressing shock at the state of the footballing legend's body.
Subsequently, it was disclosed that Maradona's bodyguard had been taken into custody and charged with fabricating evidence.
