Renowned Literary Figure Ahmed Rafiq Passes Away at 96
Ahmed Rafiq, a renowned literary figure and Language Movement veteran, has passed away at the age of 96. Rafiq, born on 12 September, 1929, in Shahbazpur, Brahmanbaria, was admitted to BIRDEM Hospital in Dhaka on 11 September and died on Thursday evening while undergoing treatment in the ICU.
Rafiq's literary journey began in 1958 with his first book, 'Shilpo Songskriti Jibon' (Art, Culture, and Life). Throughout his life, he received numerous accolades for his outstanding contributions to literature, including the prestigious Ekushey Padak, Bangla Academy Award, and Rabindra Sahitya Award. Rafiq was not only a literary giant but also a key figure in the Language Movement. In 1952, he participated in the movement and was the only student from Dhaka Medical College to have an arrest warrant issued against him in 1954. Despite his ill health, including diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic kidney failure, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, electrolyte imbalance, bedsores, and lung infections, Rafiq continued to inspire generations with his literary works until his passing.
Ahmed Rafiq's death leaves a void in Bangladesh's literary landscape. His works and activism will continue to inspire and influence future generations. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
