Recognition for Eastern German Medical Facilities in Organ Transplantation - Reward for East German Hospitals in Organ Transplantation Field

Get ready for some big kudos! Hospitals across Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia are receiving some well-deserved recognition for their outstanding work in the field of organ donation. The KMG Clinic in Soemmerda, the Clinic in Chemnitz, and the Altmark Clinic in Gardelegen are among the top performers in this remarkable endeavor, as announced by the German Organ Transplant Foundation (DSO) in collaboration with local health ministers on Wartburg, Eisenach.

Last year, there were a total of 130 organ donors in the over 130 participating hospitals in these states, marking a marginal increase from the previous year's figure. A massive 343 organs were harvested, according to DSO, a noteworthy accomplishment indeed! Nevertheless, the number of organ donations in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia slightly decreased year-on-year, dropping from 351 organs in 2023 to 2024. On a national scale, organ donations have remained static, with 2,854 organs donated in 2024, down by three from the previous year. As of 2024, over 900 individuals from these states were on the transplant waiting list, emphasizing the importance of this life-saving work.

Thuringia's health minister, Katharina Schenk (SPD), praised the recognition of hospitals beyond the top-tier providers and university clinics. Saxony's health minister, Petra Koepping (SPD), emphasized the pivotal role of transplant coordinators in hospitals, highlighting their responsibility to efficiently identify potential organ donors and create a stable infrastructure for the organ donation process within their hospitals. Saxony-Anhalt's health minister, Petra Grimm-Benne (SPD), urged a stronger community spirit, stressing the need for more people to come together to support organ donation.
