Russian Citizens' Frustrations and Self-Protection Measures Against Infections: Comprehensive Guidance
In the past week, Russia has seen a significant increase in Respiratory Infection (RI) cases, with over 696,000 cases of Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) registered by Rospotrebnadzor. This surge is typical for the second or third week of school, and the number of ARI cases has increased by 63.8% compared to the week before.
The current dominant viruses among these infections are rhinovirus, parainfluenza, and COVID-19. Rhinoviruses, known for causing nasal congestion, have a recovery time of around 7 days, as per a popular saying. Parainfluenza, on the other hand, affects the voice box and lungs, causing symptoms such as sore throat, hoarseness, and cough.
Parainfluenza infection can be particularly dangerous for toddlers, as it can cause false croup, a condition where severe swelling of the larynx makes the child appear as if they are suffocating. It's crucial to follow preventive measures, such as avoiding crowded places, limiting contacts, and regularly ventilating rooms and washing hands with soap or using an antiseptic, as advised by Rospotrebnadzor.
Alexei Khukhrev, a therapist, emphasizes the importance of certain rules for any viral illness. He advises staying at home, not overusing medication, just resting. If you have a high fever, take a cool shower and don't bundle up. However, if the fever doesn't go down and stays around 40C, it's essential to call a doctor immediately.
The increase in ARI cases among schoolchildren was twofold. This surge is linked to the end of mass vacations and the formation of children's organized groups. It's also important to note that the flu vaccine not only produces specific antibodies that provide targeted protection against the flu virus but also trains the overall non-specific immunity that opposes all infections.
The emergence of a new COVID-19 variant, 'Status', has been reported. While it usually runs quite easily, it's essential to remain vigilant and follow all preventive measures, as advised by health authorities.
Over 15,000 cases of COVID-19 were registered last week. Rhinovirus and parainfluenza infections in Russia have been registered due to seasonal respiratory virus circulation and the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Symptoms of ARI include severe hoarseness, voice change, fever, chills, sore throat, fatigue, and headache. Without treatment, cough and hoarseness can last for 2-3 weeks. It's essential to remember that preventive measures are key in managing these infections and minimizing their impact on public health.
