Despite opposition, the curry sausage will consistently feature on the canteen menu according to Apetito CEO Laabs.

Sausage dishes flavored with curry spices are losing popularity in cafeterias and dining halls.

Insights: Public canteens and institutional kitchens are adapting menus to include lighter, plant-based, and lower-calorie options in response to increasing health awareness and dietary guidelines.

German canteens are bidding farewell to their once-favorite dish, currywurst. Previously ruling the canteen scene, currywurst with fries has slid down to fourth place, struggling to stay in the limelight. Apetito, the caterer behind this shift, attributes this decline to the surge in health-conscious eating habits.

In the past, currywurst ruled supreme. But the tide is turning, and international or vegetarian dishes are stealing the spotlight, making it tough for German classics like currywurst to keep up. Surprisingly, spaghetti Bolognese has regained the top spot, followed by Chicken Korma and Bami Goreng. Vegetarian dishes, including cheese spaetzle and vegetarian spaghetti Bolognese, are also making their way into the top 5.

Apetito supplies food to kindergartens and schools, where the preference for vegetarian food among youngsters is on the rise. In Apetito's rankings of edibles in kindergartens and schools, vegetarian lentil soup takes the top spot, followed by vegetarian spaghetti Bolo and vegetable ravioli. Only two meat dishes, fish sticks and chicken fricassee, manage to crack the top 10.

Among seniors, however, the story is different. They continue to crave meat-based dishes. Apetito's senior facilities' favorites are Beef Roulade with Potatoes and Red Cabbage, Pea Soup with Sausage, and Beef and Bean Stew. Vegetarian dishes struggle to break into the seniors’ favorites list, with Potato Pancake with Apple Sauce and Königsberger klopse commanding the lowest rankings.

Munching on meat doesn't seem to be going out of style for older folks, as they often yearn for the tastes of the past. However, the willingness to try new things and embrace vegetarian food is on the rise among seniors as well.

Apetito stands as one of the largest canteen operators and convenience food manufacturers in Germany. With a turnover of around 1.35 billion euros in the previous year and approximately 12,649 employees, the company experienced an 8.5% growth compared to 2023 without disclosing its profit margin.
