Sirens to blare in up to 84 instances on September 11th
In the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, the city of Wuppertal is preparing for its biannual siren test. This essential exercise is part of a nationwide system designed to ensure the safety of the population across Germany.
The Wuppertal Fire Department (Feuerwehr Wuppertal) is the authority responsible for conducting these tests in the city. This year, two more stationary siren facilities are undergoing renovation, adding to the existing 74 active sirens in Wuppertal.
During the test, a one-minute ascending and descending wail will sound from the sirens, signifying a warning for the population. In case you don't hear a siren during the warning day, please inform the fire department via email at [email protected].
Mobile phones will also be activated during the test. Warning apps will be activated for those who have them installed, while Cell Broadcast will send warning messages to newer phones without a warning app. Some mobile sirens will be in operation in districts where the signals from the fixed installations were not heard or only faintly heard in previous tests.
The fire department in Wuppertal can mount ten mobile sirens on their vehicles. These mobile sirens play a crucial role in ensuring that the entire population, regardless of their location, receives the warning.
The initial one-minute steady tone indicates "all clear" - no danger. The test ends with the repeated one-minute steady tone signifying all clear, approximately ten minutes after it begins. An official all clear will be issued via the NINA app at around 11:45 AM, according to the fire department.
This test aims to raise awareness among the public across Germany. Twice a year, the federal government and North Rhine-Westphalia test their systems to ensure they function smoothly. By the end of this year, the fire department in Wuppertal plans to bring four more siren locations into operation.
In case of an emergency, people should turn on the radio, pay attention to further information, seek shelter in buildings, close doors and windows, and inform their neighbours. It's essential to follow these instructions to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you.
Stay safe, Wuppertal!
